Why Modern Electric Trains Run With Less Derailment Problems
Electric trains have been a source of interest and delight of enthusiasts for many years & there is no expectation that it'll slow down in the near future. Currently there are numerous varieties of model electric train sets available. A style for practically anyone, from the simple circular orbit route, a step up from the toy trains, all the way to the complex multi-layered designs created by groups of enthusiasts for many years. With the latest technological advances in train control & major improvements for the construction work, there's never a better time to join than now.
The very first model train set given to a child is usually just another play toy. The toy is usually built of wood or a simple plastic shell, with no moving parts, the action is left up to the imagination of the child. A step up from this is the toy train that'll run on a channel in a plastic base, but it's unusual to see a child actually running the train. When the child makes the transition from toys to models will really make the difference. Even the most humble model trains will be powered by an electric motor.
The most elementary electric trains seldom run into problems, as long as they're set up correctly. The track should be placed on a level, flat and even base, with none of the track propped up or having no direct support. This simple setup should allow the train action to be smooth & steady. The beginners layout should be just a simple set of tracks with no junctions or intersections, which often are the cause for derailments. Another problem caused by mixing different vendor's track types should be avoided, as this creates a more complicated design more prone to having derailment problems.
As you progress to a basic starter train set, you typically have at least a couple of junctions where the trains can be switched to a different track. In the past, these switching points were a cause for potential problems as they can cause an electrical short circuit, if configured improperly. The most common solution was to install a piece of isolation track in the switching junction. The modern locomotives use electronic power controls which eliminates this type of problem. Any track arrangement encounters fewer derailment and electrical problems if all of the track is from the same train equipment vendor.
When you reach the advanced stage of electric trains, you'll discover the new design of electronic controls will eliminate many of the old headaches. The past derailment problems encountered when setting up a track arrangement with junctions and intersections has been significantly reduced with technology improvements over the last 5 years. The major model train vendors have addressed the relevant issues to solve most of the frustrating problems caused by older equipment. There are far less derailments with modern electric train designs. The new technology will allow endless possibilities of complex layout configurations.
